# Connect your AI client

> Add the Volteras MCP server to Claude, Claude Code, VS Code or your own agent.

Every client connects to the same URL:

```
https://mcp.volteras.com/mcp
```

The first time you connect, your client opens the Volteras Portal so you can sign in and approve it. See [Sign in with the Volteras Portal](/overview/mcp-authentication#sign-in-with-the-volteras-portal) for what happens there.

<Note>
  The MCP server has to be switched on for your organization before you can connect. [Contact us](https://volteras.com/contact-us) to enable it.
</Note>

## Claude

Works in Claude on the web, Claude Desktop and the Claude mobile apps.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add a custom connector">
    Go to **Settings** > **Connectors** and select **Add custom connector**. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds it once under **Organization settings** > **Connectors**, and members then connect it from **Settings** > **Connectors**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter the server details">
    Name it `Volteras` and enter `https://mcp.volteras.com/mcp` as the URL. Leave the advanced settings empty, then select **Add**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Connect">
    Select **Connect** next to Volteras. Approve the request in the Volteras Portal, and you are returned to Claude.
  </Step>
</Steps>

To use it in a chat, make sure Volteras is turned on in the tools menu below the message box.

## Claude Code

Add the server:

```bash theme={null}
claude mcp add --transport http volteras https://mcp.volteras.com/mcp
```

Add `--scope user` to make it available in every project, or `--scope project` to share it with your team through `.mcp.json`.

Then start Claude Code, run `/mcp`, select **volteras** and choose **Authenticate**. Your browser opens the Volteras Portal to approve the connection.

## VS Code

Add the server to `.vscode/mcp.json` in your workspace, or to your user configuration with the **MCP: Open User Configuration** command:

```json .vscode/mcp.json theme={null}
{
  "servers": {
    "volteras": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.volteras.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

Select **Start** above the server entry. VS Code asks you to allow the sign-in, then opens the Volteras Portal to approve it. The tools are then available to Copilot in agent mode.

## Other clients

Any client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP and signs in with OAuth using a [Client ID Metadata Document](/overview/mcp-authentication#which-clients-can-sign-in) can connect with the server URL above. Check your client's documentation for how to add a remote server.

If your client can't sign in this way but lets you set a request header, create an [MCP credential](/overview/mcp-authentication#mcp-credentials) and send its access token as `Authorization: Bearer <token>`. Tokens last ten minutes, so this suits scripts and agents that fetch a fresh token per run better than interactive use.

## Your own agent

For a back-end system or an agent you build yourself, use an [MCP credential](/overview/mcp-authentication#mcp-credentials). That page has a working Python example.

## Check the connection

Ask your assistant:

```
Which Volteras organization are you connected to, and what scopes do you have?
```

It calls the `get_me` tool and tells you the organization, the user it is acting as, and its scopes. If it only has `get_me` and not `list_vehicles`, your connection is missing the `vehicles:read` scope.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title=""MCP is not enabled for this organization"">
    The MCP server hasn't been switched on for your organization yet, or sign-in from AI clients hasn't. [Contact us](https://volteras.com/contact-us) to enable it. You may see this after approving the request in the portal.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title=""This authorization request has expired"">
    Approval requests last ten minutes. Go back to your client and start the connection again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title=""No MCP scopes derive from this user's permissions"">
    Your role in the Volteras Portal doesn't allow viewing vehicles. Ask an Owner or Admin in your organization to change your role.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title=""Client identification failed"">
    Your client doesn't identify itself with a Client ID Metadata Document, which this server requires. Use a client listed above, or an [MCP credential](/overview/mcp-authentication#mcp-credentials).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The assistant can't see positions">
    Position fields need the `location:read` scope. When signing in, only Owners, Admins and Developers can get it, and only if it's enabled for your organization. [Contact us](https://volteras.com/contact-us) if it isn't. Each vehicle's connection must also grant telemetry access.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Some values are null">
    A vehicle's VIN, registration plate and telemetry are only returned when its connection grants access to them. See [consent-gated fields](/overview/mcp-tools#consent-gated-fields).
  </Accordion>
